Employment outlook for North Carolina
Everyone knows the American economy has slowed down and many people have been affected. Layoffs have been common and many people are worried about the economy and the employment outlook.
The economy will get better. It always does. The economy is a cycle which has it’s ups and downs. We happen to be in a down cycle right now, but in time, the economy will start booming again.
Despite all of the stories of job losses and economic woes there are still plenty of jobs to be had in North Carolina in all kinds of fields. Some job areas are booming despite any bad economic news you may hear. There are some sectors that never slow down, even in an economic recession or depression.
One such sector is health care. It doesn’t matter what the economy is like, people will always need medical care and to be seen by doctors and nurses. There will always be a need for CPA’s, LPN’s, RN’s, Phlebotomists, and other health care technicians. In fact, Registered Nurses have the fastest growing occupational outlook in North Carolina. Also in the health field, home health aides, orderlies, and nursing aides have a very good economic outlook, especially as the Baby Boomers are getting older and needing more health care. Despite what the media says about the economy, go to any hospital, doctors office, or nursing home and you will find they are always very busy places.
Other occupations with a good outlook are cashiers, retail salespersons, and waiters and waitresses.
Also on the list of growing occupations are food preps, janitors, truck drivers, office clerks, customer service representatives, administrative assistants, teacher assistants, maintenance and repair Workers, sales representatives, and receptionists.
All of the previous occupations listed are the fastest growing in North Carolina.
Some of the fastest declining occupations in North Carolina include Textile Winding, Twisting, and Drawing Out Machine, Sewing Machine Operators, Textile Knitting and Weaving Machine Setters, Industrial Machinery Mechanics, Farm, Ranch, and Other Agricultural Managers, Upholsterers, Farming, Fishing, and Forestry Workers, Data Entry Keyers, Woodworking Machine Setters, Operators, and Tender, Word Processors and Typists, Computer Operators, Loan Interviewers and Clerks, Farmworkers, Farm and Ranch Animals.
The unemployment rate has risen and many people are looking for work. It could be hard to find employment at this time, but there are jobs out there, there are just more people applying for the same jobs.
With time, the economy will build back up and there will be more jobs. Many people are relying on unemployment checks while they look for another job.
People in some occupational sectors may need to find a new job sector to work in as some sectors are slowing down and laying off workers. If you find yourself in an occupation that is cutting back workers, now is the best time to get training in another area.
With the economic slowdown, it may be an ideal time to go back to school or take classes to get training or a degree in a new field where more jobs are opening up. The Workforce Reinvestment Act (WIA) is a federally funded program to help people with employment and training.
If you are out of work, this is also a good time to brush up on your interview skills and resume writing. Make your resume look as good as possible to a prospective employer and be sure to add any volunteer work or any other non paid experience that make your resume look better. If you are out of work, it could be a good idea to start volunteering, which would give you experience in a job field, possible job leads, as well as look good on your resume.
North Carolina has experienced up and downs in the economy but North Carolina has always bounced back. There may not be as many jobs available now as there were 5 years ago and it’s a difficult time right now, but the future job outlook is good. More jobs will be made, there will always be jobs in the tourism industry near North Carolina’s beaches, and new job sectors are growing.
