NC Unemployment: North Carolina Assistance for Unemployed Workers Affected by Natural Disasters

The month of April has been a month of natural disasters for North Carolina. This has caused many workers, self-employed and otherwise to lose their jobs or the ability to continue in their line of work. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a division of Homeland Security, provides people affected by the storms and tornadoes that have have it North Carolina.
This aid is a direct result of the Presidential declaration on April 19, 2011 of major disaster site for counties in North Carolina. Part of this aid includes unemployment assistance and free legal services for victims.
This series of articles provides information, instructions and advice on how to benefit from the services and assistance provided by this program. This article will focus specifically on the requirements victims must meet to benefit from the services provided by FEMA’s Disaster Aid Unemployment Assistance.
Requirements to Qualify for FEMA Unemployment Aid
- You must be unemployed or without work as a direct result of the storms that triggered the Presidential declaration.
- You are unable to find transport to your place of work because of travel disruptions caused by the disaster.
- You sustained an injury because of the natural disasters of April, 2011 in areas covered by the Presidential declaration.
- Your place of work was damaged by the disaster and you can no longer work.
What Can Applicants Expect
Workers who were affected by the storms can apply for unemployment assistance for up to 26 weeks of unemployment benefits. Notice however that unemployment assistance is only available for workers who do not qualify for regular North Carolina unemployment assistance. Also, if you are already on unemployment assistance with the North Carolina Employment Security Commission or are part of some other federal unemployment assistance program you will not be eligible for disaster unemployment assistance.
Workers affected by the disaster can also receive legal assistance to deal with insurance claims, landlord problems, consumer protection issues and replacement of important legal documents, such as wills, birth certificates and so on.
