How Do I File for Unemployment Benefits at the North Carolina Unemployment Office ?
Filing for unemployment benefits from the NC unemployment office can be a troublesome and tricky process. Prior to filing, please register and attempt to find employment at these two employment websites
In order to prove to the the State of North Carolina that you are eligible to be claim unemployment benefits, you will have to fill out some paperwork, follow our step by step guide and you should have no problems. Make sure you have completed the following jobs prior to filing at the the NC unemployment office
- You must have worked and received payment during at least two calendar quarters of the current base period;
- You must have worked and earned wages in North Carolina to earn NC Unemployment Benefits
- You must live in North Carolina or a state bordering North Carolina
- You must report to an office of the Employment Security Commission in North Carolin. (this would be an NC unemployment Office in your area)

I received severance pay, when should I file an unemployment insurance claim in NC?
- According to the NC unemployment Office website, you are not eligible for unemployment insurance benefits for any full week covered by separation pay or vacation pay. (This will not even count towards your waiting period week). File your claim the first week after the pay period that you received your last pay check on
How long must I have worked to qualify for NC unemployment benefits?
- “Base period” is the term used to define the time frame used as the basis for determining whether or not you will be eligible for unemployment insurance. You must have wages in two of the base period quarters to be monetarily eligible
What is a Base Period?
- It is the first four of the last five calendar quarters.
How much will my benefits be?
- Your weekly unemployment benefit amount and the number of weeks of entitlement to benefits are based on what you were paid and how long you worked during your base period. The exact amount you will be paid for your unemployment insurance benefits and amount of time you will be paid cannot be determined until you actually file your claim for benefits.
I have worked long enough to qualify. Are there other
requirements?
- The newly unemployed must have become unemployed through no fault of their own. This means you can’t have been fired for negligence by your old employer, contact your local unemployment office for clarification if you have questions.
- You mush Register to get a job with North Carolina Employment security Commission NCESC. This helps the unemployment office keep accurate records of people needing employment and helps employers find them
- File a claim for each calendar week of benefits they request. You are required to keep the unemployment office up to date of your employment information
- Actively seek work during any week for which unemployment benefits are claimed (you must seek work in person on two different days with at least two different employers keep written records in case they need it)
Tips for Successfully Filing Your Unemployment Claim
- Be prepared! Before you begin, be sure to have on hand dates and rate of pay for last employment.
- Make sure you have enough time to complete the application ( 30 minutes or more), Save your application frequently you can come back to it if you need to
- Be sure to update your address and other contact details so the ESC can contact you
- Provide an email address so you can get the “successful filing” message
